51 IDA companies set up Ireland 2010 so far which doesn’t get publicized
12.5% Corporation Tax is hear to stay. Europe will not make us change it.
41% income tax is one of the lowest in Europe. If we really wanted to we could increase it and close deficit gaps etc
The Irish Banking system is sorted – Plans are in place, agreed by Europe. Yes it is a burden but it has been dealt with. All other EU states have similar banking crisis and are dealing with their’s.

After the much trumpeted Christmas success of the online shopping website Play.com, even the most ardently techno-phobic business owner would now have to concede that love it or hate it, the online market is here to stay. Especially in retail.

And little wonder really. Many of us aren’t the least bit surprised. If a business process can be simplified, made more efficient, reliable and more cost effective to boot, it only stands to reason that it should be the massive success that Play, Ryanair and other sites have become and deserve to be. Yet “online” remains a hard sell, with many local companies preferring to stick to what they know, even if their competitors are moving with the times and profiting handsomely as a result. The number of small local companies without even as much as a company web page remains astonishing.

Any local manager considering moving some of their processes online or looking at setting up a new company website may like to contact Midlandjobs for some free advice. Is it just my imagination or is the Irish Apprentice a more serious and all-round better quality show than the better established UK and US versions. The standard of the candidates is pretty high. There seems to be less of the auld self-congrulatory guff and overall they seems to be a bright bunch. Bill Cullen himself is shining through as a far slicker operator than you’d have expected as are his right hand people. Should get more interesting as the series goes on.

I went to a talk by a guy called Padraig O’Maille last Wednesday morning in the Tullamore Court. While most of his material is orientated towards business owners / managers, it’d do nearly anyone some good to go have a listen to him. The subject was Creative Thinking in Business and the event was organised as part of Offaly Enterprise week.

A step up from many similar such inspirational speakers, this guy brings along all of his West of Ireland flair, purpose and conventional wisdom with his message (as opposed to the usual pop psychology twoddle). A breath of fresh air, or so to speak. So watch out for him for whenever he’s back in the midlands. His website also fairly well captures the gist of his approach and what he’s about. Certainly worth the visit.

Jobseekers: digital Ireland – a safe career bet for the future

If you’ve had enough already of silly season journalism and in particular the over-pessimistic predictions for workers’ futures here, you could do worse than read the Ditigal Ireland supplement released once per month by the Irish Independent (Thursday business edition produced by Silicon Republic). It provides a welcome ray of light through the gloom.

While those poor financial and economic commentators are busy crying into their coffee about the dire state of the nation, our techies seem to be all “brimming with optimism” and basically just getting on with the business of creating jobs. Even at a very local level. And so at a time when many people are considering their career options it’s becoming increasingly difficult for them to look beyond a training in the IT sector for long-term job security. There’s a lot to be said for it
